Christie Gilbart, NICU Nurse
Northwestern Prentice Women’s Hospital
Nominated by Angela Foll
We nominate Christie Gilbart because she supported us and loved our son during the most challenging experience of our lives. Her intelligence, naturally loving personality and patience make her an amazing NICU nurse. On the second day of my son’s NICU stay I was finally allowed off bed rest and was determined to never leave Vincent’s side ever again. I arrived in the NICU and Christie was our nurse that day. I immediately felt comfort from her presence. She was so confident and so calm. She explained so much to me but never overwhelmed me.
We decided then that we would have Christie as our primary nurse, which at the time, I didn’t truly understand what that meant. As time went on, Christie was our blessing in the NICU and I realized how lucky we were to have her. She became a part of our team and we worked together to make sure that Vincent felt loved while receiving the best care possible. She advocated for my son and helped us so much.
After 4 days without holding Vincent, she talked to our doctors and found a way. I will never forget the moment she handed him to me for the first time, it is truly the best memory I have. I was so scared of hurting him or moving any of his tubes but she led the way and I knew she would keep him safe. Vincent’s NICU stay impacted me tremendously. The grief and worry overwhelmed me.
Christie was my breath of fresh air in a time when I felt so lost. I could leave to eat lunch, or go for a run when she was there because I trusted her completely. It was the only time I felt any relief during those months, when she was with my little guy, snuggling him, loving him, and making sure he was getting the best care. So many of his “firsts” happened with Christie there. I’ll never forget his first bath. Christie was so gentle and caring and she understood that this small moment meant so much to us. To have a “normal” moment in the midst of a stressful time was a beautiful gift.
She never missed a beat. She was always up to date on his medical history and was an active member of his care team. She asked questions that my husband and I didn’t know to ask. She comforted us and guided us when we got bad news. She was our guide and our rock during that time. Now Vincent is a happy and healthy little boy and we know that Christie played a huge part in his success. We are so honored and happy that she was a part of our family for those 2 months.
