Krys Pavlatos, NICU Nurse
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
Nominated by Emily and Brian Hahn
When our son, Bryce, was born just shy of 27 weeks to say we were terrified would be an understatement. We had no idea what to expect at the beginning of our 4 month NICU stay. From the moment we met Krys Pavlatos, her love, compassion, and genuine care for our son was so evident that we could not think of anyone else to be his daytime primary nurse. She advocated for him and for us alike. Everything from handmade crafts on St. Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day to an Easter basket for Easter, Krys made each holiday we spent in the NICU special.
The little stuffed animals she gave to Bryce during his stay are still some of his favorites. She took time to sit and talk with Bryce when we weren’t there, and also took time to sit and talk with us when we were. She answered any and all of the questions we had with patience and understanding (We had a TON!). Her positivity and calming spirit while teaching me how to insert his NG tube made me confident that I could do it alone once home. Knowing that Krys was there with Bryce when we couldn’t be, gave us peace of mind. Krys’ compassion and caring did not end with our son- she was my biggest cheerleader when I felt incredibly overwhelmed by everything and encouraged me when I needed reassurance. She was always there to give a big hug and offer kind and encouraging words at just the right time.
Krys is more than just an exceptional nurse, she is a true friend. We never would have anticipated making a lifelong friend during such a stressful time in our lives. Since coming home from the NICU we have shared holidays, birthdays, special occasions, lunch dates and countless other wonderful memories together. Bryce loves Krys and so do we. We can’t imagine Krys not being in our lives. She enriches the lives of her patients and their families. Krys truly embodies what it means to be a NICU nurse and friend.
