Megan Colwell, Registered Nurse
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
Nominated by Laura Chacon
My son, Gabriel was in the hospital for 6 months after becoming sick with NEC. For two months, Gabriel was bedridden and we felt completely helpless. Megan would always find ways for us to be involved, from giving him sponge baths to holding his hand when he had blood drawn.
On the weekends when my husband and I came in later in the day, Megan wouldn’t hesitate to spend time with Gabriel. I remember walking into the room and Megan was holding Gabriel while he napped. I knew whenever she was with him, he was in good hands. She was there when we held him for the first time after becoming sick, giving him his first bath and even we were discharged. We were moved to another floor and she still made time to come visit. After almost a year of being out of the hospital, we keep in contact with each other. She’s truly like family to us.
