Owl Give Award Nominees

Jessica Plaud, NICU Nurse
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital
Nominated by Amaria Kirby

"From the moment I met Jessica Plaud during our first few weeks as new grad nurses, it was apparent that she had a special gift. I immediately recognized her dedication and compassion for her patients, families, and co-workers. Many examples come to mind, but her time with her first primary patient, Allen whom she lovingly called “Big Al” is one to highlight.

Although not present during the very beginning of Big Al’s journey, as he was transferred to our unit due to difficulty weaning his vent after receiving a trach at an outside hospital, Jess was pivotal in his progress and care. She made herself available day after day, switching shifts so that she could be present for important moments and provide consistent care. Not only did Jess provide exceptional care, but her kind spirit also offered the emotional support that both Big Al and his family needed.

Being that Big Al is a twin, family visits were not always possible. Jess provided Big Al’s family with peace of mind, knowing that he was being cared for by a nurse who loved him and found joy in providing his care. Through every procedure, every setback, and every uncertain moment, she was the source of comfort and stability. She was also present for every win and celebrated all of his progress, which in turn helped the family become excited and confident in learning his trach care and eventually bringing him home. Jess can know exactly what’s necessary, whether it’s a shoulder to cry on or filling the room with laughter.

What truly sets Jess apart is her heart. She knew every detail about Big Al’s preferences, subtle cues, and evolving needs. Nobody knew Big Al better than Jess! She bought toys for him to play with, treated him to several “spa days,” decorated his room to create a “home away from home,” and dressed him in the cutest outfits, which his mother deeply appreciated. She advocated fiercely on his behalf and collaborated seamlessly with the care team. Her bond with Big Al and his family was not only beautiful, it was healing, and it transcended his hospital stay. Big Al was discharged home, and Jess continued her beautiful relationship with him and his family as one of his in-home nurses.

Her impact on Big Al, his family, and the lives of everyone who watched her care for him should be the standard of nursing. She is the kind of nurse who reminds us all why we do this work, the NICU is a better place because of her.”
